Brilliantly Boeing – Ingenuity

When faced with the mounting question of what more could an airline manufacturer bring to revolutionize the airline industry, Boeing turned to comfort and economy. They produced the 787 Dreamliner, the worlds first composite airliner, with luxury interiors, comfortable pressures, and smoother operation for passenger and pilot. As you watch the video, watch for the unique advances in window tinting for shade, spacious seating, and other technologies that make this pioneering aircraft ingenious.

I originally wanted to do my short video on the advances in transportation. I wanted it to cover the automobile with archive footage of Ford and Benz, then the airplane with the Wrights and Boeing, the locomotive from steam to Maglev, and then ships from sail to cruise. However, I wasn’t able to locate enough footage for that.

Then it dawned on me. This past week I went and shot a 787 Dreamliner that was headed out for delivery and I thought “Well, I’m already doing one story on innovation, I might as well use it for this assignment.” And here we are.

I didn’t plot out the scenes with telling a story in mind. I also left out a narration to just let the fresh imagery of the next-generation airliner’s lines and luxuries speak for themselves. Anyone who has travelled by air will recognize the new interiors and features as a step up.

As far as a storyboard went, I just used these images to remind me of what features I would need to show.

(I just like the bow in the wings on takeoff. And yes, it’s supposed to do that. If you’ve ever been worried about your flight’s wings bouncing around in flight, I encourage you to look at the swing stress tests Boeing conducts.)

The absence of titles explaining each feature was purposeful. I firstly figured the imagery alone would show the radical new look of air travel that comes with the Dreamliner, but I also wanted to inspire questions in people to hopefully motivate them to find the answers themselves. When I first started learning about the 787 years ago, I had the convenience of media packages and Boeing pamphlets telling me what the 787 did that was amazing. However, to learn what advancements on the aircraft made those differences I had to do my own research, and that was half the fun (at leas to me).

Fantastic video with powerful music and energy. The photography is effective in telling the story of ingenuity related to the advancement of aircraft. It’s hard to believe that Boeing could improve upon itself, yet this video demonstrates such brilliance. The selection of an orchestra type genre for the soundtrack is perfect – and the specific song queues a sense of inspiration from the first seconds off video. Great work – thank you for sharing.
